3 To examine this, we mark the five highest search frequencies in the top panel with gray lines. The logic is that the salience of deportation concerns for immigrants should increase when the government is (considering) changing immigration laws. Specifically, we check the measure’s convergent validity, or the extent to which it correlates with plausibly related phenomena ( Trochim and Donnelly 2001), by seeing if search frequencies peak with (potential) immigration policy changes. Senate Bill 1070 allowed police officers to investigate whether an individual they stopped, detained, or arrested was authorized to stay in the United States ( Morse 2011).Īlthough we think that this measure has face validity, we further assess its construct validity (i.e., how well it measures the underlying theoretical construct). The fifth highest peak occurred when Arizona’s Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act (i.e., Senate Bill 1070) was scheduled to go into effect and while other states were considering copycat bills. The highest peak happened in the weeks after President Trump signed the “Muslim ban,” the second highest occurred when Trump was elected, the third highest coincided with Trump’s inauguration, and the fourth highest occurred during legal hearings about the Muslim ban. The events are numbered in chronological order. The labeled gray lines denote important changes in United States government policy to immigrants. Thus, a salience score of 20 indicates that people used this search term at one fifth the rate that they used the phrase in its most “popular” month. The number of searches for this phrase is then measured relative to this “highest” value. The vertical axis, salience, is scaled from 0 to 100, so that 100 represents the highest number of searches in a month that were conducted for the phrase from 2010 to 2017. Note: Figure 1 plots the frequency of the search phrase “will i be deported” in Google’s data from January 1, 2010, to December 1, 2017.
